Germán Trejo

Germán Trejo-Caballero is a politician dedicated to defending the rights of immigrants in the United States and Mexico, and to improving the lot of Hispanics and Latinos through public service and civic participation. A Mexican immigrant, in May 2008 Trejo-Caballero was appointed Chair of the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) National Commission on Immigrant Affairs (LNCIA) by LULAC National President Rosa Rosales.

LNCIA acts as an arm of LULAC in the immigrant community promoting comprehensive immigration reform, advocating immigrant rights at the national, state, and local level as well as promoting membership of the organization. It also attempts to raise the consciousness of Hispanic and Latino immigants of all ages and to enhance their ability to become leaders and agents for change for the betterment of their communities, their families and themselves by elevating their social condition through education, economic development, political empowerment, education and leadership development.

In addition to his work with LNCIA, Trejo Caballero is the President and CEO of G & T Consulting, a consulting firm serving governmental, political, non-profit and corporate clients in the United States, Mexico and Canada.

Career

From 2005–2008, Trejo Caballero served as consejero (councilor) for the Mexican communities of Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky and Southern Illinois for the government of Mexico's Institute for Mexicans Abroad. In this position, both in public and private meetings, he met with some of Mexico's top-decision makers, including the country's president and his cabinet along with Mexico's 32 governors and legislators, to discuss issues related to the immigrant Mexican community in the United States and Canada. During his tenure as consejero, Trejo-Caballero was elected Chair of the Institute's Political Commission, and as Chair of the Emerging States Region and its more than 40 representatives, for the Institute for Mexicans Abroad. In November 2006, he was selected from among his fellow consejeros as the first Mexican immigrant to deliver a speech to President Felipe Calderón at the Presidential Residence at Los Pinos, Mexico City.

Many issues raised by Trejo Caballero have caught national media attention, including his petition to the President of Mexico seeking to create "Border Reception Centers" to receive deported Mexicans from the United States on the Mexican side, provide them with medical attention, a telephone to contact their families and money to buy a ticket to return to their state of origin.

In the period 2007–2008 he became the only Hispanic/Latino and first Immigrant Board Member appointed by the Ohio Secretary of State to the Ohio Voting Rights Institute, where he participated in the institute's electoral recommendations with regard to voting systems and electoral legislation for federal, state and local elections in Ohio.

Prior to his appointment as LNCIA National Chair, Trejo Caballero served as the South West Ohio Regional Field Director for the Democratic National CommitteeOhio Democratic Party in the 2008 presidential primary and general election. In this position, he oversaw all political and field operations in Ohio's 17 counties including cities such as Cincinnati and Dayton. He was charged with the political operation of the Presidential Primary Caucus in the 3rd. Congressional District and with the subsequent electoral outcome for the Democratic Presidential Primary in an area with 1.9 million registered voters.

In addition to these positions, Trejo Caballero served as the President of Centro Mexicano, a community organization and the International Institute for Democracy, where he led electoral observation missions to the presidential elections of Mexico (2000), Peru (2001), Nicaragua (2001), the Ohio state elections (2002), Argentina (2003), Russia (2004), Tanzania (2005) and Mexico (2006).

In the private sector, he served as President and CEO of Language Associates Ltd –a 150 employee translation firm with offices in ten cities across the United States, and representatives in Mexico and Japan.

Moreover, he has worked in several political campaigns at a senior level, including serving as Finance Director for State Senator Luz Robles in Utah, Hispanic Outreach Director for Ohio Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner, State Political Director for the Minimum wage campaign in Ohio, Campaign Manager for the US 4th Congressional District, and Hispanic Outreach Director in Wisconsin for Presidential Candidate John Kerry.

Numerous U.S. and foreign institutions have honored Trejo Caballero, including the Ohio Senate, the Utah State Senate, the Texas House of Representatives the City of Columbus, the Ohio State University, MLS Columbus Crew, the U.S. Congress, the Congress of Argentina, the Congress of Mexico, and the Congress of the State of Michoacán.

Trejo-Caballero has appeared on Univision's Al Punto show with Jorge Ramos, as well as on Televisa, TV Azteca, El Universal, La Jornada, La Cronica, Radio Latino, and many other Latin American and U.S. media.

He studied Architecture at the Universidad Michoacana in Morelia Mexico where he graduated with a B.A. in Political Science-International Politics emphasis as well as receiving a degree in International Studies- International Relations and Diplomacy from Ohio State University.
